CHOOSING THE RIGHT NAME FOR YOUR BABY: HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT’S THE RIGHT ONE?

Emma, Greta, Leonardo, Luigi. There are so many names for children and indecision is the name of the game as we look for the right name. Our mind begins to fill with memories, names, suggestions and people who we would like our little one to take after and who we would like to remember by using their name. How do you choose the perfect name for your baby?

It is important to remember that a child's name lasts a lifetime and, therefore, as the ancient Romans used to say, 'Nomen omen', i.e. our destiny is held in our name. A name can define characteristics and can suggest meanings, so it is always good to choose conscientiously.

There are already some legal requirements as to the choice of name, one of these being that a maximum of three names can be used other than that of the father, mother or cohabiting brothers and sisters. Furthermore, they must be appropriate and not ridiculous and use the letters of the Italian alphabet even if they are foreign.

The first suggestion is to consider possible nicknames. Often names can be shortened, in a way that parents are not happy with and so this makes them automatically eliminate some names. The second suggestion is to try and match the first name with the surname. Sometimes the two just don’t go well together or they create unpleasant meaning dynamics. This leads to a third suggestion, which is to check the meaning of the name in question. Lastly, let the choice be guided by the baby. Often, people are still undecided right up until the baby is born, but it is often the baby itself who clarifies the ideas and, as soon as mum and dad meet the baby for the first time, it all becomes clear.

Choosing a name is not easy and it is also a great responsibility. If the name is not successful among friends and relatives, there is no need to worry; only mum and dad, with their love, will know how to make the best decision.
