PREGNANCY AS A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY OF YOUR CHILD: WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING

Pregnancy for a woman is a magical experience: her body merges with that of the baby and in her womb she feels the growth of a new life day by day. The organism works in unison, coordinating every part of the body to make the mother's womb a welcoming place for the new baby to grow. Each change is fully experienced and you just can't help feeling impatient as you wait to find out about the next change, waiting to finally be able to hold your baby in your arms.

One of the most important things to remember is that every woman has her own pace, so there is no need to rush, and if you have any doubts, the best option is to refer to your gynaecologist. Emotions are high at this point and there are so many questions, but the first one will surely be: what to expect when you are expecting? And above all: how do you take care of a baby from the very first months?

The various weeks of pregnancy will be a magical time as you get to know your own body again, but also the body of your baby. You will gradually feel it grow, develop, move and learn to understand its needs without having to speak. This indissoluble and incredible bond that is created does not depend on the birth to develop, but can be cultivated already through the belly. In fact, while enjoying the months inside the mother's womb, the baby is already beginning to develop the senses that allow it to orientate itself and will therefore also be able to perceive stimuli coming from outside. All the senses develop between the tenth and thirtieth week, a period when the foetus also begins to evolve and form parts of its body.

The first senses to develop are smell and taste. As early as the eighth and ninth week, the receptors for smell and tongue begin to develop. The mother can already cuddle the baby with a healthy diet that allows the baby to enjoy pleasant and healthy flavours. If the mother eats regularly and well, it will also enable the baby to recognise the mother's body once born and during breastfeeding.

The second sense is touch, which is fully developed around the 20th week. This allows the baby to feel the belly and if someone touches or caresses it. Perceiving the caresses or the touch of people will make the baby feel loved. Thanks to touch, it will also be possible to feel other stimuli from outside, such as when the mother’s belly is underwater which has beneficial effects both for any swelling in the mother's ankles and legs, but also for the baby's perceptions.

Next to develop is sight, around the 26th week. It is thought that the womb is a dark place where the baby cannot see anything, but this is not the case, as light filters in from outside. The mother can take care of the baby, being careful not to expose the belly too much to the sun, as this could be unpleasant for the baby.

The last sense is hearing, which develops around the thirtieth week and becomes more established around the thirty-fifth week. With the development of a middle ear, the baby not only starts to hear sounds and noises, but also begins to develop balance. At this time it is very important to start talking to the baby as they can then memorise sounds and voices and begin to recognise them.

Therefore, the attention that needs to be paid to your baby should not wait until the birth, but can begin as soon as you begin to feel that this new little life is beginning to grow inside your body. Knowing the stages of development can help you understand how to interact with the baby. Don’t think that it is a waste of time to tell the baby about your days or fairy tales, to play music or simply to cuddle him with a caress. Every attention to your own child is a way of already connecting with them.

The greatest act of love you can have for the baby is to take care of yourself, because the baby lives inside its mother's body, and if she is well, then the baby will be calm and healthy as well.
