The first time that baby says "Momma"

First time with momma

Lallation or Babbling

The results of a study by British Columbia University demonstrate that the brain of an infant is structured so as to remember words with repeated syllables more easily.

As from the age of about 2 months, infants begin to make sounds that at about 6-7 months become proper syllables, and start what is known as lallation or babbling, in other words the first real attempt to communicate: these are of course not real words, nor can children of this age associate a sound to an object or concept. By modulating sounds however, a child is able to express its moods and starts to use a sort of primordial language. This happens when the baby starts to distinguish between itself and others, and feels the need to interact on another level with the people around him. Babbling is a fundamental stage in the child's cognitive development and coincides with the onset of motor coordination skills and understanding different tones of voice and the related moods of others.

Baby's First Words

When a baby starts to babble, countless women have jumped for joy thinking that baby was saying “momma”. The truth is that these are nothing more attempts to make sounds, that only after 12 months of age (but each child has its own times), will end in what is the beginning of intentional communication. Only then will the child understand that when it pronounces these soft sweet syllables, Mummy will actually respond: baby thus becomes aware that a certain sound corresponds to a specific concept or person or object, opening the way to building up its conscious language.

A great thrill

Hearing baby say “Momma” for the first time is in any case one of the most emotional moments for a woman: it seals the choice of love that started so many months ago and hearing this word is an echo of a choice that has become reality. It is the recognition of a role that women dream of which stems from the primary needs of procreation and affection and that, especially in the case of women who make the decision to become a mother, is synonymous of complete fulfilment and attainment of a goal which for some women gives meaning to their very lives.
