THE FIRST PACIFIER: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE?

When you are dealing with a baby, especially the first time that you become parents, you are full of doubts and even more uncertainties. You try and prepare as best you can, buying everything that you might need for your little one but obviously you will forget something. Often, we realise that we have got it wrong. Even if a mother follows all the advice in the right way, we have to adapt to the real needs of the baby. Making mistakes like this must not be seen as our failure as parents, but you just have to get to know each other. The baby needs to understand the mother and vice versa. One of the first things that people usually buy, after onesies and hats, is the pacifier. When the child refuses it, the mother immediately thinks that he or she might not like it. But actually, there can be a number of problems, like size, weight or material of the pacifier.

People think that all pacifiers are the same and that one is as good as another, so they end up buying generic ones, but every age and every baby has its own characteristics that need to be respected. To make sure you are fully prepared, it's helpful to understand how to choose the right pacifier.

Before looking at what to think about when buying a pacifier, it is important to consider why the pacifier is so important to the baby, what functions it has and why it is the baby's first companion. From a physical point of view it helps non-nutritive sucking, thereby allowing the child to learn and train how to eat. However, it also has psychological benefits as it allows our babies to relax and release any tensions they might have.

Once you have understood the importance of this tool, what should you consider when buying your first pacifier?

First of all, the physiology of the child must be taken into account. The pacifier must adapt to the child's palate and mouth in a natural way. Therefore, assessing the size of the face and mouth is the right way to choose. This is because if it is too big, the baby may have difficulty sucking, and if it is too small, the baby risks losing it. Weight is also something to take into consideration. Especially during the first few months, babies get used to using new things and therefore need to feel it lightly to train their mouth. If the pacifier is too heavy, it may fall out more easily and be rejected. Always check that it is gentle on the baby's face. They can often be made of material that can create annoying irritations or seams and decorations that can cause scratches or redness on the face and mouth.

If you are buying one and your baby has yet to be born, it is a good idea to get advice on models suitable for newborns.

Once your baby has been born, just listen to your baby to understand his or her needs and, with the help of these signs, it will be easier to find the right pacifier.

If you are not sure whether to buy it or not, here is a fun fact. A pacifier can stop a baby from sucking their thumb, which in the long run is a much harder habit to break, even when they are older, and can also have repercussions on the development of the mouth and teeth.

In short, the pacifier is every baby's first friend, its safe place and its outlet, but it can never be a substitute for the security and attention that parents give it. Once you have understood this, listened to advice and above all listened to your baby, the pacifier, at least for the first few years, will definitely be their best friend.
