My first suitcase

Are ready to go on holiday? Whatever the age of your kids, travelling is a pleasure, but if you don’t organise your trip properly it can turn into a nightmare for both you and your kids.

Packing is very important so here are our tips to help you remember what’s important to bring with you for your kids when you go on holiday.

Of course, what you pack depends on where you are going.

When you are ready to pack bear in mind what the weather may be at your holiday destination. Also take into account how long it will take to get there and, as we were saying, where you are going: a city, the sea, the mountains or countryside.

The first thing to do is to make a list of what you need to pack, so that you don’t forget anything in the last-minute rush. Making a checklist is not only important for this holiday, but may also be useful for your next holiday, obviously if you are going to the same sort of holiday destination!

What to put pack and how to organise your suitcase

Starting to pack in good time will help you reason things out and not forget anything, and above all make quite sure that the things on your checklist are what you actually need. Wanting to bring absolutely everything you may need is quite normal, above all when you have kids, but is it really necessary?

For example, you may not need to bring a hair dryer or a changing table if your hotel has these, so why not ring the hotel to check, that way you won’t have to bring them, saving weight and space in your suitcase.

If you are not going on a mountain holiday, you won’t need a trekking stroller or at least take a smaller stroller that doesn’t take up so much space, or you may even be able to rent one if you want to travel light This is just an example of how you can cut down on luggage if you want to travel light, above all if they are things you probably won’t use.

If you have more than one child, it may be a good idea to pack their underwear in colour coded bags, so that you have everything you need at your finger-tips.

Generally, the essentials to pack are:

  • pyjamas

  • short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts (in you are going on a mountain holiday or if the weather changes)

  • dresses

  • shorts

  • socks

  • vests

  • windbreaker

  • swimsuit

  • shoes and sandals (if you are going to the beach)

  • comfortable closed shoes (if you are going to the mountains)

  • hat and sunscreen

If you have very young children, don’t forget:

  • baby bottles

  • a pacifier

  • diapers

  • snacks

  • wipes

  • small bottles of water

  • a change of clothing and underwear

  • their favourite game

  • a CD of children’s songs (to make the journey as pleasant as possible).

Don’t forget medicines (above all medicines that require a prescription), your health insurance card, a simple first aid kit and health insurance if you are travelling abroad.

Pack a separate suitcase for your children

Although packing your children’s things in your bag saves space and the number of bags you carry, it’s a good idea to pack a bag for each child in order to keep things tidy and find what you need more quickly.

If your kids are old enough, get each of your kids a mini-suitcase that they can pull around on their own; they’ll love feeling more involved in the travelling experience.

There are so many mini-bags in lots of different colours and designs to choose from for your kids. There are also ride on suitcases that your kids will love and can play with if you have to wait (for example at an airport): this makes the holiday experience even more enjoyable for them!

Usually luggage designed for mini travellers is classed as hand luggage, so that you can carry the bag on board, and have everything you need at your finger- tips (including their games).

If your children have their own bag, let them help you pack; it’s lots of fun and educational as well; so, if they’re old enough to help you pack you should also let them choose the clothes and games they want to bring, and discuss with them what they need to bring and explain to that they cannot bring everything but just what they need because space is often limited (especially if you are travelling by plane).

Now that everything is ready, all that’s left for me to say is ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!
