Let’s educate our little one’s taste at the table

Here we go again, dinner time has arrived but once again your little one has started to throw a tantrum: is this scene familiar to you?

We all know that children have a tendency to limit their food choice to flavours and sensations they like: they love sweet, salty, crunchy and fatty, but will always do their best to avoid healthier foods like vegetables, fruit and fish.

Don’t worry, and just deal with the situation calmly. If you force your children to eat food they don’t want, it will only turn them against it even more. The key for a correct diet is routine: your little ones will get used to the sensations that they feel when eating a certain food, and so it will be easier for them to try and accept it.

It is also important to transmit small dietary habits to even the youngest ones. To provide them with a wide variety of flavours and smells, even starting from 6 months, will facilitate the way your little ones accept food.

To choose the right combinations in shape, flavour, colour and texture will make it all even easier.

To push your little ones to live by a correct diet, you only need a few strategies. Your children don’t like fruit? Then why not get them drawn into by taking them to the market or preparing with them a good fruit salad? Or even better, a good slice of watermelon cut into the shape of little stars will appear much more appealing to the eyes of your little ones.

If your children also make a fuss during the meals, here are 5 tips you can use to help them and face their aversion:

Take your little ones with you to the market or to do the shopping

Try and get them involved in the choice of the food, explaining to them why it is important. Do you have a garden or a terrace? Brilliant! Why not try and grow a fruit tree or some vegetables with your children? They will definitely be more motivated to eat what they contributed to grow.

Create new dishes together

Try and experiment with new dishes together with your little ones, even preparing the easiest recipes can turn into a game! By doing this you will ignite their curiosity and get them to have a positive attitude towards that food.

Set an example at the table

Children admire their parents, even from a very young age, they want to be like them and often try and imitate them in everything. This is also what it is like at the table, if they see you eating and enjoying certain foods, they will be more interested in eating them.

Bring back the food they don’t want a little at a time

The first attempt has failed, ending in screams and tears? Don’t give up, you can try once more, but without insisting. Allow your children have the right to refuse a certain type of food, sometimes it is just a matter of time before they change idea.

Offer small portions

It is normal to be suspicious when seeing new foods, but if the portion is small it will all seem much easier. If it is a success, nothing will stop them having seconds.

How long until the next meal? If your little one also makes a fuss at the table, roll up your sleeves and try and follow these tips!
