How Sofia met the “Real” Santa Claus

18/12/2017

Babbo Natale

Dear Falcotto,

I am Agnes, Mother of Sofia who is two and a half years old. You must know that my adorable little monkey is obsessed with Christmas. Last year she discovered Christmas for the first time, and since then she has done nothing but talk about Christmas lights, Christmas trees, Christmas gifts and above all Santa Claus!

It all started last year when I took Sofia to a Christmas party in town, where one of the men had dressed up as Santa Claus to give out gifts and treats to the children. Since then Sofia completely lost her head for that little old man with a long white beard. Just think that for quite some time every time she heard the church bell ringing, she thought it was Santa Claus coming. How we laughed at that!

As time went by she forgot a little about that gentleman from Lapland….. until the first Christmas decorations started to appear in town. Sofia became so excited and kept on asking me “When is Santa Claus coming? Tonight? Tomorrow?"

So I told her that Santa Claus comes to our house in secret on only one night of the year, because he certainly cannot let everyone see his magic tricks! That was when Sofia asked me a question that floored me. “But what does he do on all the other days then? If he dresses in red they are going to recognise him and discover all his magic!” She looked really worried! So, I told her that he dresses in his red suit only on Christmas night, and on every other day he dresses just like us and does the things that we do: he goes shopping, cooks, sleeps, plays with his elf and fairy friends...

One afternoon we were at the mall shopping for our last Christmas gifts when I heard Sofia calling me and pointing to the cash registers. She started pulling me towards the cash registers, and then let my hand go to run towards a gentleman who was packing up his shopping. He was about seventy, tall and rather stout, with a red woollen cap and a white beard.

Sofia approached him, and pulled his jacket saying hello to him. He leaned over to her to greet her and that was when the fun part came. Sofia put a finger over her mouth and whispered something into the gentleman’s ear; he laughed and then patted her cheek with a wink.

I apologized and called my daughter to me, asking her what she had said to him. “I told him that I knew who he was but that I wouldn’t tell anyone and that his magic secret was safe with me. Oh, and I told him that at Christmas I would like to have a doll with blond hair!”

Needless to say, my daughter is absolutely certain that she met the real Santa Claus .... in a queue at the cash register of the shopping mall So sweet and funny!
